Abstract During the past decades, a degradation of groundwater quality in many coastal areas characterized by intensive agricultural and tourist development has been observed. One such area is that of Malia on the north coast of Crete, east of Heraklion. This dissertation has studied spatial and temporal fluctuation in concentration levels of anions, cations, pH, electrical conductivity and total organic carbon in the groundwater of the Malia area. The physicochemical parameters studied comprise pollutants from land usage such as agriculture and land development, as well as from groundwater overexploitation. The analytical data are derived from 17 wells-boreholes varying in depth from 5 to 100 meters, sampled monthly. The method of ion chromatography was used to determine ion concentrations in water samples. Total organic carbon was measured with the O.I. Analytical Model 700 TOC Analyzer. The principal components determining groundwater quality in the area were discovered via the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) statistical method. PCA showed that the degradation of groundwater quality is due mainly to seawater intrusion and, to a secondary degree, to pollution from agrochemichal and household waste. Cluster Analysis (CA) was applied in order to determine the geographical areas characterized by different levels of salinization and different degrees of pollution from agrochemichal and urban waste. No specific trend was observed from graphs of seasonal variation of physicochemical parameters. Water quality evaluation, based on nitrate ion concentration, demonstrated that the water in the shallow water table is unfit for drinking, as opposed to that in the deeper water table. Water quality with respect to electrical conductivity and chlorates meets irrigation standards along general lines.
