Abstract Iron oxide nanoclusters have emerged as a revolutionary tool in the realm of theranostics, characterized by their unique physicochemical properties and biocompatibility. This study presents an in-depth analysis of the current advancements and applications of these nanoclusters in medical diagnostics and therapy of atherosclerosis. Iron oxide colloid nanoclusters (NCs) have proven instrumental as MRI contrast agents, enhancing imaging quality for a more detailed tissue representation. Their adaptability for targeting the protein VCAM has been realized through surface functionalization. Expanding beyond their recognized characteristics and armed with their proven minimal cytotoxicity, this study delves into the crucial interplay between these nanoprobes and cells across varied physiological settings. While their biodegradability addresses concerns of long-term accumulation, their ability to combine with other imaging agents showcases their versatility in multimodal imaging. This study underscores the transformative role of VCAM functionalized iron oxide nanoclusters in the evolving landscape of personalized medicine and highlights areas of focus for future research.
