Abstract

The distribution of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb, Cd) was studied in the surface sediment. Benthic invertabrates and two species of demersal fish (Multus Barbatus and Serranus Cabrilla) with the use of the atomic spectroscopy (GFAAS) the variation of metal concentrations were examined according to depth and the sediment fractions. The significance of invertebrate groups was evaluated and the contribution of the different feeding habits of the two fish species to metal levels. The fate of metals in the benthic ecosystem of north Crete depents mainly on organic matter distribution. On invertebrate groups (Crustacea, ????) and their abundance and finally on the feeding behaviour of demersal fishes, the last being the top predators in the environment
