Abstract |
Ensuring the semantic correctness of the information stored in database systems has been recognized as one of cornerstone issues in the development of information systems. It is also one of the major bottlenecks in the systems' performance. Semantic correctness is specified in terms of integrity constraints, which are declarative specifications of properties of the domain being modeled that should never be violated by any operation that updates the database. The majority of commercial database systems do not provide but for the enforcement of very limited types of constraints. The task of ensuring, that transaction execution will not violate any integrity constraint is left to the transaction designer. In large, semantically rich, multi-user and possibly distributed databases, this task becomes extremely difficult: a transaction designer may not be familiar with all the specified constraints and multiple transactions may affect more than one constraint at a time. Our research has followed one avenue in addressing the problem of ensuring data integrity, which is called maintenance by transactions. Maintenance by transactions modifies transaction specifications so that database integrity constraints are guaranteed to hold in any executable sequence of transactions.
