Abstract Broadcast data delivery is encountered in many applications where there is a need to disseminate information to a large user population, with little (pull-based) or no (push-based) uplink capability. The scheduling objective is to arrange the broadcast so that the overall average population delay is minimized. In this work we consider the case where the users are in need of groups of items, rather than single items. The former arrangement is advantageous, provided that the groups are overlapped to some extent, that is they contain common items. For this data format we provide a scheduling algorithm and simulation results. The case of the periodic prohibition of the transmission, eg in a broadcast disk-like environment, is also considered. Comparison is held versus the pipWL-0.5 algorithm, which provides near-optimal results for disjoint groups. We use a slight modification of the pipWL algorithm, in order for it to comply better with the new data arrangement. For non-disjoint groups, our algorithm performs better than other scheduling algorithms.
