Abstract The subject of this Ph.D. Thesis is a method for solving large scientific problems that are described with Elliptic PDEs. This method is called "Interface Relaxation" (IR) and splits the geometric domain of the PDE into a set of non-overlapping subdomains, where each one has its own model. The natural conditions on the interface between two subdomains are used to derive the IR method that will be used. The IR methods are iterative methods and at each step the mathematical model of each subdomain is solved in order to compute the global solution. Finally, the IR methods are the main core of a Collaborative PDE Solvers Framework, which has the following properties among others: fast convergence, wide applicability, increased adaptivity, high efficiency, inherent parallelism and software reuse.
