Abstract Over the years, there is a growing need to find effective methods to minimize organic and inorganic pollutants in indoor and outdoor air, with the ultimate purpose of improving its quality, to address environmental issues and impacts on human health, the which result from their high concentration. Photocatalysis, is a method with significant application advantages, which involves the adsorption of reactants on the surface of the catalyst and upon irradiation by photons of appropriate wavelength, produces active chemical elements with a strong oxidizing effect, thus significantly minimizing air pollutants. The purpose of this thesis is to study the photocatalytic oxidation of gaseous nitrogen oxides (NOx) using metal oxides. More specifically, the present work was called to modify the titanium dioxide (TiO2) material for its application under visible radiation by using nitrogen-doping, where ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3), urea (CO(NH2) 2) and thiourea (CH4N2S) were used as nitrogen sources. Furthermore, the deposition of photocatalytic paste on substrates of different porosity was investigated. Experiments were carried out in the presence of visible light irradiation aimed at degrading the pollutant nitric oxide (NO), the results of the photocatalytic activity of the samples were recorded. The photocatalytic activity of the best materials on different substrates was also studied. Furthermore, an unsuccessful attempt was made to create nitrogen impurities in the zinc oxide (ZnO) material, as the sample prepared from this composition flaked twice, more details are given in the appendix. The structure and the morphological characterization of materials are completed by X- ray diffraction (XRD), the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and the Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy EDS.
