Abstract The interest of manufacturing tissue-like phantoms by using different materials has increased during the last years. Tissue-like phantoms are important for the design and calibration of biomedical imaging systems and they contribute significantly to limiting the use of animals in research. Moreover, it is possible to control various properties phantoms, such as light absorption or scattering. The aim of this study is to create tissue-like phantoms and control their optical and acoustic properties. Three different materials were used as basis for phantom development : gelatin, agarose and gel wax. These materials have been used in previous studies for the characterization of absorption, scattering and for measuring speed of sound. Each sample was measured for its total reflectance and transmittance using a spectrophotometer for a wide range of wavelengths (400-850 nm), and these measurements were processed using the Inverse Adding – Doubling algorithm (IAD). Acoustic measurements were conducted utilizing a Photoacoustic setup operating in the frequency domain and a novel method based on these measurements allowed the determination of speed of sound with high accuracy.
