Abstract Self-cleaning surfaces shows a lot of applications in our daily live by improving the quality of life. The scientific community has focused to the development of responsive surfaces which respond to external stimuli such as light, pH, electromagnetic fields, etc. in order to convert the surface from hydrophobic to hydrophilic and conversely. The aim of this thesis is to development of thin films with transition metal oxides with two different deposition techniques and to study the hydrophilicity | hydrophobicity properties of these surfaces. The second step was to modified the surface with surfactant molecules to further increase the hydrophobicity of the thin films. Finally, we evaluate and conclude the results on the properties of thin films with transition metal oxides, on deposition techniques and on modification of the surface with surfactant molecules.
