Abstract Aim of this master’s thesis is to study the properties and gas sensing efficiency of two previously unexplored material families, namely, metal thiocyanates and metal cyanamides, for this specific application. In this work, we synthesized nickel thiocyanate, zinc thiocyanate, copper cyanamide and zinc cyanamide through simple procedures. Commercially available powders of copper thiocyanate and cobalt thiocyanate were utilized. All compounds were structurally, morphologically and optically studied. The gas sensors were fabricated through simple deposition techniques like drop casting and spin coating. All sensors were tested at room temperature with the lowest input voltage possible for each compound. CuSCN already being a great ozone and hydrogen sensor, exhibited exceptional response to CH4 and NO, while Zn(SCN)2 responded solely to H2. Both CuNCN and ZnNCN displayed great gas sensing properties. Specifically, CuNCN was able to detect O3, H2, while CH4 and ZnNCN detected O3, H2, CH4 and CO2.
