Abstract |
The main purpose of this thesis was the development of an optical-cavity-enhanced polarimetric instrument and its employment to measuring various chiral organic vapors causing particularly weak optical rotations with unprecedented sensitivity. More specifically, we focused on (+)-α-pinene, methyl lactate and ethyl-1-d-benzene. Pinene is a terpene compound found in the oils of many coniferous trees, especially pines, and (+)-α-pinene is one of its enantiomers. Methyl lactate is another organic compound, the methyl ester of lactic acid. It is naturally derived and can be obtained as a single enantiomer. Ethyl-1-d-benzene breaks reflection symmetry only due to the interchange of H and D nuclei, so that the optical activity is the result of the breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, making it extremely weak, with an expected specific rotation of about 0.1-1 deg cm3 dm-1 gr-1. In contrast, (+)-α-pinene and methyl lactate have an expected specific rotation of a few tens of deg c cm3 dm-1 gr-1 and a few deg cm3 dm-1 gr-1respectively. The measurements presented here were based on a Cavity Ring-Down scheme, employing two signal reversals, allowing us to obtain results for the absolute optical rotation of the aforementioned gaseous samples. We acquired measurements with a sensitivity of ~6 μdeg/√Hz, while state-of-the-art commercial polarimeters can only achieve sensitivities of ~5 mdeg/√Hz. This improved sensitivity opens the way for new applications of chiral polarimetry, such as the detection of chiral thin films.
