Abstract The purpose of this thesis is the study of electronic stucture (ES) and optical properties of strained Si/Ce superlattices (SL's). The ES is studied with the Tight Binding method and the description of strain is incorporated in agreement with experrimental results for deformation potentials of Si and Ce. With the application of the CPA the dielectric function of Si /Ce alloys is celenlated. According to the results the zone fording causes new optical transitions at energies below 1.0ev in SL's. Si n Ce lo-n SL's, properly strained, exhibit direct gap. The disorder as a result of the diffusion of the SL's interface removes k conservation in optical transitions and causes a)widering of the energy gap b)change of the function behaviour of the absorption coefficient and c)drastic reduction of the strength of the optical transitions
