Abstract Scattering light arises from optical inhomogeneities in the medium. These inhomogeneities have been established to be the fluctuation of the optical dielectric constant, brought about by local fluctuations in density, concentration and optical anisotropy. Here we utilize photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS) to study the dynamics of density fluctuations on bulk poly(cyclohexyl methacrylate) (PCMHA) and plasticized PCHMA with DOP above and below Tg. The effect of additive (DOP) on the primary and secondary relations of PCHMA is explained in terms of recent theories. Complementary dynamic mechanical and dielectric measurements are compared with the light scattering results. Concentration fluctuations have been studied - for the first time - above Tg and the coupling scheme is employed to explain the different temperature dependences. Additionally, the reorientation of small molecules in polymeric matrices has been studied and we find a strong evidence for polymer induced modification of the solvent properties.
