Abstract |
In the present study the analysis of multiple material samples obtained from two works of art from the Oulu City Art Museum with the use of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy is presented. At first, the chemical composition of the two works of art was determined by 1Η 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy (gCOSY, gHSQC, gHMBC) as consisting of an unsaturated polyester resin polymer skeleton, paint overlays, protective coatings, and other organic materials. The main chemical compounds identified in the two works of art were UPR monomers and oligomers, propylene glycol (fully and partially esterified) and phthalate esters. Styrene, benzaldehyde and benzoic acid, which are degradation and oxidation products useful in assessing weathering and aging of the works of art were also identified, along with fatty acids signals that indicate the use of colours based on drying oil binders. Furthermore, the amount of hydrolyzed propylene glycol units in each sample was found to be in excess of fully esterified ones, indicating the significant aging of the works of art. This was also indicated in the elevated amounts of oxidized forms of styrene (benzoic acid and benzaldehyde), which originally serves as the cross-linker in the UPR resins, and can be used to differentiate between fresh and aged UPR samples. Finally, it was observed that of the two works of art, the one exhibited permanently outdoors was more susceptible to degradation compared to the artefact displayed indoors in the museum.
