Abstract In this work we investigated the triad synthetic reaction system CoII/RCOO-/aldehydes (RCOO-: OAc- or piv-, aldehydes= salicylaldehyde-type aldehydes, salH, FsalH, ClsalH, BrsalH και naphthH) as a means of constructing polynuclear cobalt complexes. We were able to isolate a family of four pseudo-calixarene {Co16} ring-like complexes [Co16(sal)16(OAc)16]•16MeCN (2•16MeCN), [Co16(Fsal)16(OAc)16]•xMeCN (4•xMeCN), [Co16(Clsal)16(OAc)16]•8MeCN (6•8MeCN) and [Co16(Brsal)16(OAc)16]•2MeCN•2H2O (8•2MeCN•2H2O), a dinuclear complex, [Co2(Brsal)4(OAc)]H2NEt2•3MeCN (7•3MeCN), a tetranuclear defective dicubane, [Co4(Brsal)6(piv)2]•2Et2O (9•2Et2O), and finally, a family of three 1D coordination polymers, [{Co3(sal)2(piv)2(H2O)2}•2PropCN]n (10), [{Co3(Brsal)2(piv)4(H2O)2}•2PropCN]n (11) and [Co3(naphth)2(piv)4]n (12). In each case, upon using different aldehyde ligands, we were able to isolate analogous clusters with different structural features. The magnetic behaviour of 2, 6, 8 and 9 was studied, and in the case of 2, 6, and 8 dominant ferromagnetic interactions were found, while complex 9 displays dominant antiferromagnetic interactions.
