Abstract

The effect of the nature and the concentration of organic carbon on the formation of chlorine dioxide disinfection by - products were studied. In order to achieve the objectives of the present thesis laboratory experiments were performed to untreated surface and groundwater. Water disinfection was studied under realistic conditions, which contributed to the understanding of the impact of certain parameters such as the concentration of the disinfectant, the reaction time, and the concentration of organic and inorganic precursors on the formation and speciation of the most important disinfection by - products detected using chlorine dioxide as the disnfectant. Studies on the quality of natural untreated waters allowed the estimation of the nature of organic matter and the representative range of the concentration of total organic carbon and inorganic ions. The results of this study constitute to the understanding of the formation of the disinfection by - products, especially the inorganic DBPs, in order to help prevent problems associated with the specific disinfectant when it is used at water facilities and the distribution system.
