Title Μελέτη της ατμοσφαιρικής εναπόθεσης οργανικού αζώτου στην περιοχή Ανατολικής Μεσογείου
Alternative Title Study of the atmospheric deposition of organic nitroden in the region of the Eastern Mediterranean

Abstract In the present work measurements of organic nitrogen took place in the wet deposition in the urban region of Heraklion and in the wet and dry deposition in the removed region of Finokalia. The results were compared with other corresponding studies in the region. The atmosphere constitutes an important transmission path of chemical substances and trace elements from continental to the coastal and marine regions in which they enter in the aquatic phase. The nitrogen constitutes one of the most important nutritious components for a marine ecosystem. Its atmospheric deposition can affect the biological balance of a marine ecosystem. The organic nitrogen constitutes an important piece of the nitrogen cycle in the atmosphere, its contribution to the total nitrogen in samples of rain is important, and it can promote the growth of micro-organisms. Its importance consequently can not be ignored for the region of the Mediterranean and more specifically the Eastern Mediterranean that it is considered oligotrophic. The method that was followed for the analysis of organic nitrogen is reported in the bibliography as persulfate. The percentage of attendance of organic nitrogen in total nitrogen in samples of wet deposition in the Finokalia is 27% and in the wet deposition in Heraklion 39%. These results agree with the equivalents of other studies in our region and the differences between Heraklion-Finokalia are explained if we take in mind the characteristics of each region. The corresponding percentage for the dry deposition in the Finokalia is 39%. The organic nitrogen constitutes an important piece of total nitrogen that deposits in the region of Eastern Mediterranean. His role in the productivity in the marine ecosystem that up to now was unknown appears finally to be important. More research is needed in order to clarify its real role in the region.
