Abstract In this work, we designed and constructed metamaterial structures/antennas and studied their efficiency as sensors. We tested them in different directions to measure their S21 parameters (transmission). Their sensing capabilities were evaluated rigorously against different aqueous solutions enriched with typical agricultural fertilizers. In the first part of this thesis, we evaluated typical metamaterials structures such as the single-ring resonators on printed circuit boards (PCB), as well as engraved/contemporary structures (CSRRs) on copper plates as efficient sensors against agricultural crop residues and fertilizers. In the second part of this work, we fabricated metamaterial-based antennas and measured the S11 (reflection) coefficients against typical agricultural pollutants. The objective of this study is to develop a real-time sensor for agricultural purposes that is easy to manufacture and user-friendly. Our experimental data clearly demonstrate the potential of metasurfaces as effective sensors for detecting water pollution.
