Abstract Utilization of the bosonic character of polaritons for the formation of polariton condensates and exploitation of their strong non-linearities and large coherent lengths offer the possibility of creating novel opto-electronic devices. The existence of strong coupling regime in semiconductor microcavities at room temperature is of significant importance when trying to realize practical technological applications. We initially, present our experimental study on the control and manipulation of polariton condensates and explore the possibility of room temperature operation. Then, we investigate the existence of strong coupling regime in a hybrid organic-inorganic microcavity that utilizes the organic component to achieve polariton lasing near room temperature. In addition, we show strong coupling at elevated temperatures for a hybrid polariton light emitting diode by efficient electrical injection through the inorganic part of the structure. Furthermore, we realize a polariton based THz detector by investigating polariton interference patterns created on a high quality semiconductor microcavity ridge. By angle-resolved real space spectroscopy we measure the change in rate of the spatial frequency of polaritons induced by local temperature changes and estimate the sensitivity of a polariton ring interferometer device
