Alternative Title Teaching number theory in secondary education

Abstract This thesis was written with the intention of examining the inclusion of the teaching of Number Theory at secondary education level, as well as the learning effects that such a change in curriculum would have for students’ performance in Mathematics and their opinion of the subject in general. The thesis begins with a literature overview, where the basic concepts and terminology that is related to the subject are introduced, followed by research conducted in the University of Crete. Questionnaires were distributed to undergraduate students of the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. The goal was to gather information regarding the teaching of Number Theory in secondary education as well as their own experiences with it in their own education. The questionnaires were also given to secondary education teachers. The results showed that the majority of the participants in the survey agree with the teaching of Number Theory in secondary education.
