Abstract |
In secondary education, absolute value with both definitions and exercises is taught in all classes. Establishing the concept of absolute value is not a simple process. Just like the mathematicians faced challenges in establishing the concept of absolute value, so the students face significant problems in understanding. The purpose of the work is to record the opinions and perceptions of secondary school teachers, as well as the techniques they use to teach the absolute values of numbers in the various middle school and high school classes.
The 17 secondary school mathematics teachers who participated in the research were asked to respond to a questionnaire with two main axes. The first axis consisted of six questions, which aimed to capture the opinions of the teachers regarding the investigation of the concept of absolute value. The second axis consisted of three questions that aimed to record the opinions of the teachers regarding the investigation about absolute value. The analysis of the responses initially showed that there is a concern over the teaching of the concept of absolute value in secondary education. The teachers notice that there are difficulties in several mathematical concepts related to the absolute value and mainly in the A high school, where it is assumed that the students are introduced to the concept of the absolute value. The teachers point out that in urban areas they have not noticed as many difficulties as in island and semi-mountainous areas. Even the teachers state that they make use of examples with the aim of understanding the geometric concept of absolute value. Finally, it is worth noting that the teachers are of the opinion that a change is needed in the teaching method of absolute value at many levels such as in school textbooks, the material, and the teaching method from the teachers' side.
