Abstract The object of this thesis is the student’s self-assessment as a technique of assessment as learning. The aim of this study is to investigate the contribution of the student's self-assessment to the improvement of their learning. More specifically, the following sub-objectives were explored: a) whether the identification of the anticipated learning outcome and the criteria that constitute a successful outcome help students realize their learning progress and/or products b) whether the students can make proper use of the criteria and give a reasoned and substantiated opinion of their learning progress and achievement and c) whether the student's participation in peer-assessment processes strengthens their critical thinking and contributes to the development of their self-assessment ability. In order to achieve the above purpose, a quantitative survey was conducted on 30 first-year students of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Crete, during the winter semester of the academic year 2019-2020. The basic data collection tools were two electronic questionnaires of self-assessment. The results of the research show that the identification of the learning objectives, as well as of the criteria that indicate the degree of their achievement and the quality of their work, did not help many students to reflect on how their own work meets the goals set of learning concepts and skills. The above students failed to make proper use of the criteria and make a reasoned and substantiated judgment regarding their knowledge and skills, resulting in over-estimated evaluations and a sense of higher self-sufficiency. The small number of peer-assessment processes in which they participated was not able to strengthen their critical thinking and their ability to self-assess.
