Abstract The process of mathematical proof is the cornerstone of mathematics and the key element that differentiates it from other sciences that rely on experiments combined with theoretical approach. In the present thesis we analyse the didactic approaches and proposals of experienced high school mathematics teachers concerning the process of proof in secondary education, the ideal way of introducing it according to their proposals and propose a new three-level theoretical model concerning algebra in secondary education analogous to that of Van Hiele's five levels of geometry. Based on this new model and in order to improve the process of proof, we propose a five-subject test in the algebra course of the upper High School (class of 22 students) which the teachers analyse and make their proposals.
