Abstract The present thesis deals with the engendering procedures of women on a mountain village of Crete, as they are being presented via biographical interviews and group discussions. The qualitative data were accumulated from a women’s empowerment initiative that took place in the village. The theoretical perspective and methodology of the work draw from poststructuralist feminist theories, anthropological, sociological and historical studies and the feminist method. Through the analysis, the hegemonic discourses and social practices that construct the gendered subjectivities of women become visible. At the same time, the analysis shows the strategies and resistance of women in order to interfere with or resist the normative prescribed position that village’s society has prepared for them. The analysis showed that women's subjectivities are constructed in multiple, often conflicting and contradictory ways: Participants simultaneously consent to and clash with both gendered normative discourses established in the community and with new, complex parameters embedded in these discourses, which are introduced to the village through the continuous transformation of rural society and its exchange with contemporary hegemonic representations of women. As a concluding remark, the research showed that the belief in the binary gender ideology as a dominant system of conceptualizing social relations continues to dominate in the village, indicating segregated gender roles and worlds and not allowing for strong changes in gender inequality.
