Abstract The present thesis attempts a theoretical reconstruction of the critique of inverted consciousness as found in the writings of Hegel and Feuerbach. In this respect, the thesis aims at the critical examination of certain modern forms of consciousness, as well as at the reconstruction of certain arguments/prerequisites related to the method of critique. What is understood as inverted forms of consciousness are the false – which also means ideological – forms of realization of modern social relations. The critical approach to the object of knowledge, as attempted by Hegel and Feuerbach, seems to pave the way for an investigation of the possibilities of a new inversion of the already inverted condition, this time in terms of emancipation. The thesis seeks to trace the immanent arguments that are to be found in the writings of the two philosophers through which such an undertaking can be established, and which, on the one hand, will identify the false character of the forms of consciousness, and on the other hand, will search for the possibility of overcoming them. In order to establish such a problematic, the first part of the thesis focuses on the Hegelian Phenomenology of Spirit, to the extent that, through its constant transitions, it contributes to the critique of consciousness in terms of immanent critique. Hegel, through the problematic of the "inverted world" and the "inverted consciousness", attempts to show how consciousness is necessarily involved within its ideological forms of realization. The critique of modernity seems to be possible within the aspects of political freedom in the chapter on "terror" and "subjective moral consciousness" in the chapter on "beautiful soul". The dialectic of enlightenment and faith, which gives birth to the modern value of "utility" but also to the critique of modern egoism, which establishes the principle of subjectivity, is immanent to the critique of modernity, and forms part of the program of the Feuerbachian philosophy. As far as Feuerbach is concerned, the present thesis, grounds its argument on his critique of religion, as developed in The Essence of Christianity. The strengthening of the argument of reconstruction is attempted through the programmatic texts of his philosophy during the 1840s. The question of emancipation of the "human kind" from religion seems to permeate the entire Feuerbachian critique. The extensive reference to the category of "sensuousness" concerns the attempt to demonstrate it as a totality, while the reference to a scheme of "anthropological materialism" reveals, in addition to the philosophical principles of Feuerbach, the question of intersubjectivity which sheds light on Feuerbach’s “essence of the human kind”. Finally, the reconstruction of the argument of modern egoism and the principle of subjectivity within modernity are incorporated in Feuerbach’s 1860’s writings. The principle of subjectivity, within a framework outlined as modern, seems to find a place in Feuerbach's attempt to emphasize certain forms of modern realization of the human essence. The question of human emancipation is found on a sensory-mediated anthropological materialism which Feuerbach attempts to establish.
