Abstract

The subject of this thesis is to study and investigate the professional relationships between mental health employee in three community-based mental health structures which are located in the city of Rethymnon. The choice of these public mental health structures has been with specific criteria. On the one hand, each one of them work autonomously from each other, however, always in connection and common orientation with regard to the provision of mental health services to those who seek for it and need it. On the other hand, the services which are provided, are addressed to a different group of people with psychiatric disorders or experiences each time. However, the structure of the professional role – mental health treatment group- is perceived according to the orientation of the research of this work upon a common theoretical and scientific base. For these reasons we consider that consists a suitable social field to conduct this study. Aim of this study is the investigation and description of the professional roles and boundaries of the mental health employee in the interaction between them. Specifically, our interest is focused on the area of the distribution of their roles and the responsibilities between the mental health professionals – employees and more importantly in regarding to the questions we ask below:  What are the terms of forming a professional role of the mental health employees in a public mental health structure with regard to their position and their profession (a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a social worker etc.)?  What is the type of relationships mental health professionals developing in a public mental health structure between other professionals who have the same profession, but also when that differs?  How do the professional boundaries between the mental health professional / employees change relatively to the responsibilities of their role each time? For conducting this study, we chose the qualitative analysis and data connection through semi-structured interviews in order to have a closer understanding on the research field and the subjective narratives of the professionals. Through these views and experiences, not only from their current work in the public mental health structures, but also from sharing knowledge and experiences from previous works in the same or related institutions and services, we aim at the understanding of the procedure of forming the role both as professionals and employees. As well as, the dynamic -social- network of the relationships in which a professional is situated and works in as part of a group with others and the kind of the work they undertake.
