Abstract

Domestic violence is a global phenomenon that affects the lives of millions of women, being at the same time one of the most serious problems that societies all over the world are trying to confront. Police, as the civil institution that enforces the law, plays a major role in the confrontation of the phenomenon. However, the way police officers manage domestic violence cases is contested. At the same time, the adoption of Istanbul Convention by Greece has resulted in many changes in the framework that operates against domestic violence. The present study describes domestic violence in Greece, the role of police in the fight against the phenomenon, while it illustrates the most significant parts of the national and international legislation associated with domestic violence, underlying the changes that Istanbul Convention brought on the Greek legislation and police.
