Abstract In the last decade in Greece, as a result of the economic hardship, no teachers were hired. The staffing of the schools was, and is, done with substitute teachers who sign a project contract, for a certain period of time, and then get fired. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the job insecurity experienced by these teachers. More specifically, it focuses on the experiences and perceptions of substitute teachers, of all specialties, of primary education who serve in the prefecture of Rethymno. The prefecture of Rethymno was not chosen by chance. Rethymno is an island region, therefore remote, which hosts a large number of substitute teachers from all regions of Greece and is chosen by them because recruitment is more likely, compared to other mainland regions. To collect the data, twenty interviews were conducted, some face-to-face and others by teleconference, during the period of February – March 2021. From the analysis of the results, it emerged that substitute teachers feel extremely insecure, regarding their work. The feeling of insecurity they experience is influenced by both personal and organizational factors. Prominent among these factors are continuous legislative reforms. The polynomial and change of perspective, regarding the recruitment, overturns their life planning, fills them with anxiety about the future and has an impact on both their personal well-being and their educational work. The remarkable thing that emerged from what the substitute teachers said is that despite the bitterness, disappointments and insecurity they feel about their working future, in the vast majority of them, they do not think of giving up the dream of their life, which was and continues to be the teaching profession.
