Abstract Job precariousness is one of the most important features of labor market in modern societies, with significant implications for workers. The topic of this particular thesis concerns the job precariousness of substitute teachers in primary education. The purpose of the work is to investigate, through the qualitative method, job precariousness as an experience and how it affects the lives of substitute teachers. This work is divided into two parts, the theoretical part and the research. In the first part, a literature review is made on the subject of precarity, while in the second part the research and its results are presented. In order to carry out the research, semi-structured interviews were carried out with substitute teachers of primary education, who were divided into three groups based on their previous service in the public school. The first group included substitute teachers with 10 years of service, the second group included substitute teachers with less than 4 years of service, and the third group included those who worked, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with three-month employment contracts. The most important finding of the research carried out is that substitute teachers, in a wider context of social insecurity, are affected by job precariousness throughout their life span. More specifically, the precarious conditions they experience are seen as a necessary but transitory situation that will lead them to a more permanent, stable and secure job. Working under these conditions, they feel financial and psychological insecurity, since it is not determined if and when they will work. Therefore, on the one hand it is difficult for them to cope financially with their daily life and on the other hand they cannot plan their future. The constant travel they are forced to do, due to their work, affects their interpersonal relationships as well as their educational work. Their precarious position was aggravated by the financial crisis that reached Greece in 2010, but also by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, it is clear that the expectations they had from their profession as students changed when they started working in the public school.
