Abstract The present research focuses on the understanding of the basic elements of the Marxian theory of the modern social relationships, namely, of capital and the capitalist society. This theory is mainly developed in Marx’s magnum opus, in 'Capital', and in the manuscripts of this work. The present work considers the logic of subsumption to be the main systematic logic of capital. This logic refers to the way that capital, which appears as the ‘general’ factor, subsumes, subordinates and embodies ‘specific’ factors and elements of the social productive process. The main theoretical hypothesis is that the concept of subsumption appears as an analytical concept of key importance, as a basic ‘Formbestimmtheit’ (form-determining) source and mechanism, that binds the whole architecture of 'Capital', despite the fact that the logic of capitalist subsumption appears to be clearly, analytically and systematically developed mainly in the manuscripts of this work during the 1860’s and, specifically, in those that are named 'The Results of the Immediate Production Process'. In this case, this dissertation focuses on the analytical distinction between the ‘formal subsumption’ (and its restriction) and the ‘real subsumption’ (and its various specific forms) as well as on the dialogue between these two distinct forms and the historical preconditions of their dominance. The main purpose of the present work is to examine how this specific methodological selection of Marx contributes to the constitution of a conceptual and methodological equipment of an - historically and socially - enriched theoretical construction. This theoretical construction is mainly located in the first volume of 'Capital' and, in particular, in the chapters that are concerned with the production of absolute and relative surplus-value and the process of capitalist accumulation. More specifically, the logic of 'formal subsumption', with the potential need of its restriction and reformulation and with its dialogue with the real/material dimensions of subsumption, appears to constitute the communication channel between the systematic logic of capital and its historicity: that is, the historical possibilities of its self-transformation and its historical preconditions. The main position that is defended is the following: such a theoretical construction, that permits a kind of dialectic between a dynamic system and history, contributes to a formal analysis (anatomy) and a critical social interpretative understanding of the modern object, of its various dimensions and levels of abstraction, and to an axiological critique of the historical possibilities of its dominance. Thus, the analytical frame of a theory of society is determined, upon which the problems of the capitalist form (which are basic problems of the Marxian theory), are identified in such a way, that makes them possible to be answered not in a dogmatic way but in a way which is analogous to their complicated and contradictory character.
