Abstract	This thesis examines the Greek Enlightenment from the perspective of a cultural and social history of childhood. This work uses gender as a category of analysis and through the study of eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century pedagogical and medical discourse shows how ideas and understandings of childhood evolved and changed over time. Emphasizing the importance and benefits of a rational upbringing, these works, original or translated, focused on childhood and through a set of rules tried to redefine the content of the upbringing and education of children within the family. In addition, this thesis examines selected evidence of private - family life (correspondence and autobiographical texts) to explore social attitudes related to children who lived in the urban environments of the Ottoman Empire and the Greek-speaking centers of Europe. The study of these primary sources revealed that children's lives and emotional relationships depended on social status and partly differed from the normative standards of the time.
