Abstract This thesis belongs to the field of political philosophy and examines John Rawls’ ontological claims through his work “Theory Of Justice”, as well as Michael Sandel’s stimulating critique, as articulated in his work “Liberalism and the limits of Justice”. John Rawls, originated from the current of deontological liberalism and the tradition of contractarianism, and formed his own sturdy view on the principles that should regulate a well-ordered society. Based on Kant, Rawls attempts to stimulate his thought and modify it in a distinct way during the turbulent second half of the 20th century. Thus, he wonders about the principles of justice that people who are ignorant of the current socio-historical conditions would agree on. His positions and methodology were the starting point for an extensive and a fruitful dialogue among many theorists from different traditions who marked political philosophy in the second half of the 20th century. One of these critics of the rawlsian work is Michael Sandel, who is part of the communitarianists’ tradition. Sandel forms a clear critique on Rawls’ work and on the abstract individualistic claims of liberalism, disputing the notion of the living community and the formation of the subject through collective processes. On the first part of the thesis, I will focus on the ontological claims of the rawlsian theory of justice, namely, on the principles upon which Rawls formed his own theory. On the second part, I elucidate some additional rawlsian positions and I present Sandel’s critique.
