Abstract

The aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, to present the phenomenon of financialization and to examine whether the observed increase in financial activities causes destabilizing forces in the overall economy. On the other hand, to examine whether Hyman Minsky's theory of economic instability can explain the causes for the observed problems arising from the enlarged financial sector. Also, the Basle Committee's Accords from the Bank of International Settlements are used as an example of the way in which the financial sector is being regulated in the last few decades, especially after the 2007 crisis, so that the different interpretations are easier to be spotted and so the reactions to the phenomenon of financialization. This project is a secondary research where, through the presentation of the relevant bibliography, Caverasi's case is being examined and confirmed, that "the combination of speculative banks, radical uncertainty, deregulated financial markets and the unpredictable dynamics of short-term investment make the economic system endogenously unstable and FIH up-to-date " (Cavergasi, 2014: 06). The above analysis, through the presentation of the changes in macroeconomic figures and through the presentation of the results they cause, ultimately leads to the assessment that the most appropriate way to understand the complex problems of the financial system is from the point of view of Hyman Minsky's theory, since changes in the financial sector eventually lead to a more general transformation of the global financial system, making it even more volatile.
