Abstract

The regional problem in Greece has been an object of heated scientific debate, especially since the 1990's and mainly in the realms of regional economics. The purpose of the thesis has been to suggest and implement an alternative political-economic framework and a critical geographical approach for analyzing uneven regional development in the case of Greece. The main argument, resulting from the analysis of data of different sorts and from various sources, statistical data, legal texts, policy documents, publications on the press and interviews, suggests that geographical change and the restructuring of unevenness in the case of Greece supplement and fulfill a radical political and economic transformation, during the period 1993-2010. During this period of time, common ground is found in that the regional problem, usually approached as divergence in terms of income or other macroeconomic indices, has evolved in a positive way. Nevertheless, analysis here suggests that the above do reflect only a fragmentary aspect of the problem, as it reveals “hidden” norms, structures and patterns of socioeconomic development in space, political contradictions and subtle forms of injustice between regions in the course of globalization and European integration.
