Abstract |
The aim of this paper is to analyse the characteristics that make up the Greek petty bourgeoisie within the social formation. The petty bourgeois class in Greece remains to this day the most numerous class, divided into the traditional and the new petty bourgeois class. These two manifestations represent multiple professional groups, but they are dissimilar in terms of socio-economic aspirations. Moreover, the thesis seeks to remove through theoretical approaches the journalistic term "middle class" which has wrongly prevailed in public discourse for decades, as over time it has been assimilated by the majority of Greek society, creating the illusion that everyone belongs to the "middle class". The scientific documentation is based on the positions of Greek sociologists and political scientists, who clarify the terms petty bourgeoisie, social formation, capitalist mode of production and polyvalency. The present text is written in the wake of a decade-long policy of memorandum, of which the petty bourgeoisie was the most burdened, as well as at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, which radically changed the correlations within the petty bourgeoisie, giving the new petty bourgeoisie the first say. As far as the structure of this paper is concerned, the first section will analyse the term social formation. The second section will analyse in detail the social subject of the petty bourgeoisie through the division into traditional and new petty bourgeoisie, according to Nikos Poulatzas. In the third section, the role of the Greek petty bourgeoisie and how it has historically evolved from the mid-20th century to 2010 will be discussed. In the fourth and last section we will be concerned with the issue of polyvalency introduced by Konstantinos Tsoukalas and how the phenomenon explains the Greek version of « aren’t we all middle class?».
