Abstract

In a world where environmental consciousness is increasingly becoming an integral part of people's daily lives, sustainable development has emerged as an indisputable necessity and prerequisite for businesses that aspire to long-term success. This study delves into the significance and complexities of incorporating sustainable development into the business model and Sustainability Report of a company, specifically for an airport company. Through extensive literature review, the structure and fundamental requirements of the new European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) are outlined and compared to the voluntary Sustainability Standards, such as the IFRS Standards, incorporated in corporate reporting in the Asia-Pacific region. Due to their criticality, specific focus is placed on the challenges and opportunities arising from the CSRD implementation, as well as the ESG-related practices that the European airports can adopt or have already adopted. Special emphasis is also placed on the analysis of the key approaches to the Materiality Assessment and its interoperability with the GRI Standards 2021 and the ESRS Standards. The closing segment of the study presents a case study of Athens International Airport (AIA) "Eleftherios Venizelos", which delved into AIA’s business model and value creation model, along with its ESG-aligned vision and strategy. Furthermore, it examines the ESG practices and policies implemented across AIA’s operations and value chain, thus showcasing the value created for all AIA’s stakeholders.
