Abstract This thesis is based on the Smart Specialization Strategy (RIS3), namely the Smart Specialization Strategy for the Region of Crete (RIS3Crete), as in the research program "Governance, Sustainability and Regional Economy " KA 4289. The vision of European Union for a Europe of smart, self-contained and without financial constraints developed (2020), was the reason for creation of the Project: Smart Specialization Strategy. The research, innovation, development, specialization as entrepreneurship are the key words relating to the whole of the vision application framework (2020), and analyzed throughout the duration of this diploma work. The RIS3 trying to improve governance by proposing reforms in every European region in order to enhance the quality of life of society, to develop economic transformation strategies through competitive challenges as making the dynamics of each region attractive to the international market. KA work 4289, reflects this effort for the Region of Crete, and was also a driving route for writing this work. The first part analyzes theoretical approaches to sustainability, regional development and governance. In addition, it presents the research and the results of the strategic sectors (health sector, environment and agriculture policy) of Crete in order to understand the necessities and ultimately be set up to tackle proposals. The second part is analyzed in Figure Strategy smart specialization, emphasizing Region Crete. Highlights the priorities and objectives and frameworks proposed strategy to upgrade the Region of Crete.
