Abstract |
The subject of this paper refers to the meaning of the term power and how it is
presented in the historical play of William Shakespeare King Richard III. Power is a
notion that is found from classical antiquity until today, and assigned a lot of different
meanings by philosophers and others, making it, with the passage of time, a notion of
immense political interest. The glamour of power is outlined in one more historical
figure: Richard III, a king whose passion for the conquest of power did not let him
rest throughout his lifetime. Of course it was his choice. Thus, the majesty of power
can entice every person, from the purest to the most invidious, because its «canvas»
can mislead governments, regimes, leaders and inspire false hopes in the people.
However, if one underestimates it as not tempting, it can undoubtedly be dangerous.
We can understand this from Niccolò Machiavelli’s book The Prince. In this play it is
suggested that man is mean and acts to his advantage, just like Richard III, who is a
figure with exactly these characteristics, which is why he is recognized as a
“Machiavellian” leader.
