Abstract In the first section an attempt is made to present NATO initiatives in the Mediterranean Region. When did the NATO need to focus more on this area and what are the reasons which keeps the interest continued there. In this context is the actions of NATO with main the Mediterranean Dialog. The steps, the decisions of the Alliance and the initiatives which have transformed the dialog in the form it has taken today. In the second section the analysis of the actions taken by the European Union for the Mediterranean region could not be absent. Taking into account the fact that the South European states are states of the Mediterranean and they are directly affected by the changes taking place in the region, this section shows all initiatives taken by the EU or member of the Union for the Mediterranean. Greece, because of its geographical location, has an advantage due to the county location to the European continent, which is also too close to the Asian and African continent and bordering the Mediterranean Sea. This position of "impose" has a role to play in every geopolitical event in the region and to react quickly to any new relevant changes as a result of the location directly affected. The events of the “Arabian Spring” rattled the area by the end of 2010, and the discovery of important of hydrocarbon in the Cypriot and Israeli EEZ are events occurring in a wider area in which significant area occupied and the Greek territory. The construction of the pipeline TAP which will pass from Greece and will provide Europe with the azerbaijani gas will give the country a chance to recover economically and to claim an important role in energy policy in the EU. Thus, the presentation of the actions of the Western European Union and the Common Security and Defense Policy, the OSCE and the 5+5 Dialog, recorded the voltages and the aims of the EU member states, the concerns and aspirations, but the results demonstrate the potential of the Union both in the region and its relationship with NATO. In the third section, an attempt is made on the valuation of the challenges and opportunities facing NATO in the Mediterranean in this century. Thus far the action both in the region and in other undertakings, is sufficient to provide a picture of the advantages but also the disadvandages the alliance have to fight. However, the NATO action is unique and unsurpassed in the region, which is demonstrated by the way in which promote the enlargement of the alliance in the region but also from both fairly targeted for the future. The fourth issue is the European Neighborhood Policy and lastly the fifth the Euro-Mediterranean network for conflict prevention. Finally some conclusions are recorded, such as those by the literature on up-to-date the NATO action. The valuation of the Mediterranean Dialog, the most important initiative, seems to be particularly difficult to demonstrate exactly what should be the improvements within the alliance, in order to deal as effectively as possible the challenges in the region, critical to the security and stability not just in the Mediterranean and the West in general.
