Abstract

The Great Depression, which began in 1929, profoundly reshaped the political, social, and economic landscape of nations around the world, marking one of the most severe economic crises in world history. During this time, industrial production plummeted, international trade was curtailed, and unemployment soared to unprecedented levels. Greece, with its already fragile economy based mainly on agriculture and a limited industrial sector, was not left unaffected by this global financial turmoil. This thesis is divided into two main conceptual parts, covering in detail both the international and Greek dimensions of the Great Depression period. In the first part, the economic and social situations of Europe and America before and during the crash of the American stock market are briefly presented. The causes that led to the financial collapse are examined, as well as its effects on the American economy. At the same time, the crisis is analyzed at the national level, focusing on the social and economic consequences from the outbreak of the crisis in 1929 until the bankruptcy of the Greek state in 1932. In the second part, the political dimension of the Great Depression in Greece is investigated through the analysis of the proceedings of the Greek Parliament during this specific period. The positions of parliamentarians and political parties are highlighted, with an emphasis on the proposals and disagreements formed in the context of the parliamentary debate. Equally important is the point of view of extra-parliamentary political factions, such as the Communist Party, thus offering a broader understanding of the prevailing political and social landscape. This two-pronged approach, combining literature research and analysis of original parliamentary debates, allows for a detailed understanding of not only the economic but also the political and social dimensions of the Great Depression. It sheds light on the complex interactions that shaped Greece's course through one of the most critical periods of modern history.
