Abstract Sustainable development and social sustainability are two issues where the international arena started to be concerned very late. In this paper, both issues will be analysed in equal detail and the key situations in Greece and our neighbouring Italy as well as the sustainability model in Sweden will be compared. Three very different countries with very different political programmes and very different lifestyles of their inhabitants but with so much in common to share. So in September 2015, the United Nations (UN) document "To change our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" was adopted by a range of countries, which establishes, among other things, a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet, ensure the promotion of human rights and guarantee prosperity for all. However, it should be borne in mind that the sustainability of the planet and of global societies is based on different political and socio-economic components. The urgent need to mobilise the global community for sustainable development requires a great deal of effort on the part of states, communities and, above all, individual citizens themselves. The sustainable development phenomenon is a modern approach with the main objectives of protecting the environment first and foremost, but at the same time social progress and clearly.
