Abstract The present thesis deals with the issue of the delimitation and extension of the sea zones of Greece with the zones of the neighboring states based on Greek and International Law. The demarcation of the coastal zone is a long, laborious and unpredictable process. The issues that arise and need to be addressed are many. Among them are the different legal views or interpretations of the complex and ambiguous laws and customs of the law of the sea, technical issues as well as various economic interests. During the recent years, these interests have played a major role in the launch, postponement, success or failure of a negotiation-delimitation. Moreover, political considerations should not be overlooked. These often contribute to perpetuating the ambiguity or causing problematic situations between states due to conflicting interests. Based on the above, this thesis is structured as follows: Initially, in the first chapter, the definitions of territory and territorial sovereignty of Greece are examined from the constitutional point of view, followed by a brief historical reference to the International Law of the Sea. Subsequently, the definitions of inland waters, the coastal zone, the contiguous zone, the exclusive economic zone (EEZ), the continental shelf, the flight information region (FIR), the search and rescue area and the open seas are presented. Finally, the rules, the customs and the international regime governing the delimitation of sea zones are analyzed. In the second chapter, the thesis focuses on the territorial waters of a country. After a brief historical review of the evolution of the concept of the coastal zone, the rules and the methods for defining this zone’s width, internal and external boundaries are analysed. Finally, the rights and obligations arising from the delimitation of the coastal zone are presented and are related to international navigation. In the third chapter, the current legal regime of Greece is examined regarding the coastal zone, the Greek bays, the establishment of baselines and the establishment of a border zone. At the same time, the thesis examines the advantages that the settlement of these issues under the International Law of the Sea could potentially offer. In the fourth chapter, the procedure that must be followed under the Greek constitution in order to extend the Greek territory-coastal zone either by formal Law or by Presidential Decree is analysed. In addition, examples of such efforts in the recent past are listed, namely the 2018 Presidential Decrees and the 2021 law enactment. In the fifth chapter, a presentation is made of the already delimited sea zones of Greece with the neighbouring coastal states in the Ionian and Aegean Sea and the prospects for improvement for the benefit of the Greek territory. Particular reference is made to the case of Turkey, a neighbourhood with the most intractable problems and the deepest differences between the negotiating parties on demarcation issues. Finally, an effort is being made to make proposals and thoughts on the future of Greece on this issue. Taking into account the advantages offered by the extension of the borders of the territory, especially in the economic field, this paper tries to give a brief presentation of the situation of the last few years, noting the developments that have taken place, the problems that have arisen and the solutions that may be offered.
