Abstract |
The present study deals with the formulation of the Euro-Atlantic relations within the new international geostrategic encironment that was formed after the end of the Cold War. A key feature of the new world order was the conversion of the international system from bipolar to unipolar as since the collapse of the USSR. There has been no force that is able to muster enough power to challenge US sovereignty. Within this new unipolar system, there has been a need to redefine the Euro-Atlantic alliance as the causes that had necessitated its establishment during the Cold War had disappeared. In the early years of the post-Cold War era, both sides considered that maintaining this alliance was in the interests of both sides. However, the relationship between the two partners within the alliance has always been asymmetric due to the great US supremacy in the financial and the military field. This supremacy often enabled the US. to take unilateral action whenever they considered that national or global security was at risk, causing the displeasure of its European allies. The hegemonic behavior of the US within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the negative effects that this behavior can have on Europe's economy and diplomatic relations with the Arab countries, in particular, necessitate a review of Europe's need for a Euro-Atlantic alliance and the speeding up of processes for developing a European defensive identity.
