Abstract This dissertation constitutes an attempt to answer the question of whether the attempt to apply the theory of "small government", aka the attempt of as much as possible minimization of the influence of the government and the state functions are genuinely something as effective and moral as its supporters claim. For this reason a summary of the arguments of the theory of rational choice as well as the historically important arguments of F.A.Hayek(who did not support the minimization of government but whose arguments have nevertheless been used to support it) and M. Friedman. about "small state" is presented To contrast those arguments, first the other theories about the state are presented, and then it is attempted in-depth to locate possible logical failings of this theory. For this reason, a look at the historical perspective of the argument is attempted at first, which concludes that there is a lack of historical evidence for the safe judgment of this theory. After this, the question that has to be asked is whether the moral intentions of this theory regarding the value of freedom, which said theory considers a primary moral value, is truly safeguarded by a "small government", with the answer to that question being probably negative. In the end, an analysis is attempted about whether a "small government" truly advances the average standard of living, as it is claimed, or not, with serious objections raised against the assumption that a smaller state equals a better standard of living. In Conclusion, even though a safe conclusion cannot be extracted without powerful empirical evidence, the logical foundations of the benefits of minimization of the government are probably not as sound as they should be.
