Abstract Analyzing the phenomenon of the Russian revolution as a whole, it is important to understand that 1917 is the tip of the iceberg. Its final outcome can in no way be considered inevitability or predetermined. It was formed under the influence of very specific political and social factors, as well as major disappointments, which facilitated the final victory of the Bolsheviks. The 1905 revolution, which is the subject of this paper, is the matrix of these factors. It was the first serious confrontation between the long-standing and merciful Tsarism and the social groups that sought to bring about a change in the obsolete political structures of the Russian Empire. Among these social groups, the politically immature and still small working class may have been a minority in 1905. At the outbreak of the revolution, the reins were held by other groups whose aim was not the complete rupture and elimination of Tsarism, but the partial concession of political and social freedoms for their side. In other words, the 'breaking' of the absolute monopoly of power, which was for centuries being held by the tsars without the slightest social challenge. Taking the facts of 1905 as granted, how do we get to the formation of the first workers’ state in the world? This is, among others, the question that this paper aims to address, through the analytical and contradictory perspectives of two political thinkers who have dealt extensively with both the events of 1905 and their consequences during the following period.
