Abstract The position examined in this study is that, under Bernstein's influence, social democracy in its historical development followed ideologically and politically a continuous revision of its positions, in an effort to systematically adapt to political, social and economic realities. In this context, social democracy has maintained a stable and consistent core of values adapted to reality and compromised with it. Depending on the degree of its retreat towards compromises, social democracy is characterized as aggressive or defensive. On the basis of the social policies pursued by the Social Democratic Governments of Blair in Great Britain, Schröder in Germany, Jospin in France and Simitis in Greece, it is attempted to substantiate the position that the Third Way was a creative but at the same time defensive version of a new social democracy. At the same time, the argument is strengthened, that in all the cases under consideration there were areas of social policy in which the traditional social democratic principles, equality, and solidarity were conditionally maintained, even in difficult conditions of neoliberal rule. The new social democracy has never abandoned the model of the welfare state. However, it has reconstructed it in such a way that social protection and security policies are no longer based on the traditional principle of general provision, but on the principle of selectivity and individual activation.
