Abstract

The subject of the current study is the understanding of the lived experience of psychosis, towards a more effective treatment. So, in the first chapter, the emergence’s historical context of the concept of schizophrenia is introduced, together with the appearance of the insights which are still affecting today's prevailing perception of schizophrenia, and are critically examined. In the second chapter the psychoanalytical conceptions for the understanding and treatment of psychosis are presented, as some psychoanalysts have made the first attempt to understand the subjective dimensions of psychosis, in an attempt to psychoanalytically treat psychotic individuals. In the third chapter various perceptions for the psychoses from an existential-phenomenological point of view are presented, after the examination of the philosophical forms on which the development of those theories is based. Namely, existential-phenomenology is considered as a tool for understanding the psychotic experience. Afterwards, an examination is made on the contemporary phenomenological considerations, which are based on the theoretical background of the previous chapters. In the end, reference is made to narrative and dialogical approaches, which, are considered to be familiar with the phenomenological approaches and seem to corroborate them, opening new pathways to the treatment of psychosis. It turns out in this study, that the complicated nature of schizophrenia demands treatments which are multi-leveled and adapted to the different needs of the people.
