Abstract |
The research presented in this thesis focuses on the lived experience of recurring admissions of drug addicted men who are currently members of opioid substitution therapeutic programs in the Greek Organization Against Drugs (OKANA), in Thessaloniki, Greece. The participants were 8 men who had at least 3 previous treatment attempts in drug addiction programs. A multimodal hermeneutic-phenomenological inquiry was used in this research, as the principles and the steps of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) were combined with the use of visual methods and more specifically the use of drawings by the research participants. Eight individual drawings were carried out by the participants and then an equal number of individual semi-structured interviews. Common experiences among participants in their substance use journey and recovery efforts emerged from the IPA analyzes and were organized into six Group Experiential Themes which are as follows: a) The beginning of the journey, the end in itself and the hiding, b) Multiple narrative “ruptures”, fragmentation and inability to create a meaning, c) Sickness, hitting a rock bottom and forced admission- Reasons for drug treatment admissions, d) Prisons of reformation and places of perpetuation of trauma- Reasons for exiting the drug treatment programs, e) The internalization of the drug addict identity- The self today as “broken”-“lost” and “sick”- and f) The significant others who “hold” and accept the self. Also, the research highlighted the discrepancies regarding the different approaches to dependence within the programs, the experiences of rejection within the programs, the agents of forced admissions into the programs as well as the different narrative ruptures of the self during use and their capability to create a meaning. This research is the first attempt to investigate and understand the phenomenon of recurring admissions in Greece using a qualitative methodology. Future studies should focus on investigating this underlying experience in different phases of treatment, in different types of programs and in different population groups.
