Abstract |
The ability to regulate emotions is one of the fundamental elements of human behavior related to multifactorial domains such as substance use but also linked with protective factors such as self-esteem and mental resilience. The impairment of regulating the emotion and managing a substrate of "turning" of individuals towards the adoption of dependent behaviors, both legal and illegal. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationships of emotion regulation, defined as the individual's ability to monitor, evaluate and modify the nature and course of an emotional response, with the phenomenon of addictions and specifically of nicotine dependence and alcohol use. In this relationship, the aim was to investigate the effect of the characteristics of mental resilience and self-esteem. The theoretical background was based on Gross's (1998) Process Model of Emotion Regulation, which defines as two key components of emotion regulation familiar reappraisal and expressive suppression. The sample consisted of 406 participants (70,7% females, 29,1% males), aged 18-27. The Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND), the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) were used to assess the variables of the study. According tot the results, the two components of emotion regulation (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression) were not found to correlate with nicotine and alcohol dependence. However, the results indicated that the two components of emotion regulation were found to correlate with resilience and self-esteem. Finally, it was found that self-esteem and resilience do not mediate the relationship between emotion regulation strategies and alcohol and nicotine use. These findings suggest that the relationships of the variables in the current study are important even though they did not show statistical significance in the results due to the sample and the absence of nicotine and alcohol dependence. Future research would provide a deeper understanding of the relationship of emotional regulation with substance use in the Greek area.
