Abstract The research presented in this thesis focuses on the family role on drug addiction and social reintegration of people in the Greek Organization Against Drugs in Thessaloniki. Every person is inextricably connected with its family and family is among the most distinct systems of socialization that can also promote personal change. The role of the family system in drug addiction and recovery is regularly established in literature, where specific characteristics and relationship patterns have been understood as ‘risk factors’ in the beginning and continuation of addictive behavior, for example poor or confrontational family relationships. Moreover, family can contribute to the beginning of the rehabilitation process acting as a motivation for change, as well as to the preservation of drug abstinence functioning as a secure and stable support system and promoting personal wellbeing. However, family can often impede and hinder recovery holding stigmatizing views about the former addict and questioning his/her new recovered identity. Therefore, addiction and recovery can be understood, according to systemic theories, as ‘parts’ of the different systems in which the individual is part of, and family is one of the most important systems among them. Therefore, the aim of this research was to show how individuals speak about their families during their recovery ‘journey’ until now, when they are in the phase of social reintegration searching for employment and trying to reestablish their past relationships and roles. The interviews that were held were considered as stories that people use to share when they talk about difficulties and transitions in their lives, and they were analyzed according to the principles of Dialogical Narrative Analysis. The analysis demonstrated a number of different ‘voices’ concerning addiction and recovery, as well as the family system and they were coming from the scientific speech of the therapeutic programs and society. Almost all of the voices that emerged in the stories ‘talked’ about the dominance of the family system during the recovery process, offering help and supporting the individuals. This was the core narrative that emerged from the analysis and ‘talked’ about the family as a stable supporting system that never leaves its members no matter what.
